The race starts at the historic Cabrillo National Monument, where participants are required to take a shuttle bus from the finish area (there is no private vehicle or pedestrian access to the start). From there, the course takes runners past the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, through quaint Point Loma neighborhoods, into the very scenic San Diego Bay taking runners onto Harbor Island, past The Star of India, through downtown San Diego and finally into Balboa Park where the race finishes in front of the Hall of Champions.
Course Time Limits
There is a strict 3-hour time limit for the half marathon to complete the course (13:44-minute-per-mile pace). Participants who do not reach North Harbor Drive and Harbor Island Drive (6.3 miles) by 90 minutes after the race starts, will not be permitted to do the Harbor Island section of the course (approximately 2 miles) and will instead be directed to continue on the route to the finish line.
The half marathon time limit is based on chip time, meaning the time limit countdown begins the moment the participant's timing chip passes over the start line timing mat.
The time limit is necessary to ensure the health and safety of all participants as the public roadways must be opened to normal traffic at specified times and closed to participants. Participants exceeding the time limit pace may be asked by race staff or San Diego Police Department personnel to take a shuttle van to the finish. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE HALF MARATHON OR THE 5K IF YOU DO NOT EXPECT TO FINISH WITHIN THE TIME LIMITS.
Every half marathon participant will receive a beautiful, top-quality, short-sleeve finisher's shirt. Shirts must be picked up at the AFC Fitness Expo during regular Expo hours. They will not be mailed. While we will do all we can to ensure you receive the shirt size you request, unfortunately we cannot make any guarantees. Click here to learn more about the Expo including the Expo dates and times.
Bib Numbers/Timing Tag
We use the ChronoTrack's B-Tag. The B-tag is a disposable tag that is mounted on your bib number. To ensure an accurate time, race bibs must be clearly visible on the front of the torso and not covered by outer apparel, unaltered and unmodified (do not fold or wrinkle) and pinned in all four corners. Please note that bib numbers will not be mailed out. They must be picked up in person at the AFC Fitness Expo. Be prepared to show your photo ID to claim your bib number.
Another person may pick up your bib number for you, but must present a photo or copy of your picture ID. Bib numbers are nontransferable and irreplaceable if lost, and entry fees are nonrefundable (see Cancellation/Refund/Transfer Policy below for exceptions).
Live tracking will be available for friends and family to track you along the course on race day. A link will be posted on the homepage, the week of the race.
Race Day Bib Number Pickup
If you’re unable to attend the AFC Fitness Expo and need to pick up your bib number on race day, select the "Race Day Bib Number Pickup Convenience" option during your registration ($20). Your bib number will be available for pickup at the corner of Presidents Way and Park Blvd. in the grassy area on race morning starting at 4:00 a.m. Anyone attempting to pickup their bib number on Sunday who hasn't paid the $20 fee will be required to pay onsite (cash or credit card accepted). Race shirts will be available for pick up in the Finish Festival area in Balboa Park after the race.

Race Day Parking and Shuttles
There is no vehicle or pedestrian access to the start line on race morning. You MUST take the shuttle bus from the finish area to the race start.
You may park in any legal parking lot in Balboa Park. Parking lots are shown on the Finish Area map labeled with a "P." The Largest parking lot is the zoo parking lot adjacent to the Northern bus loading area.
The shuttle buses will leave from 4:00 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. There are two bus stops near the finish line on the east side of Balboa Park where you can catch the bus to the start:
- The first is the corner of Presidents Way and Park Blvd.
- The second is the corner of Zoo Place, and Park Blvd.
The Finish Area map shows the bus loading areas. If you miss the last bus, you will not be able to run the half marathon.
If you are staying at the host hotel, your room package includes bus transportation from the Sheraton to the start area and returns to the Sheraton at the finish from Balboa Park. This service is only available to registered guests.
Race Day Gear Check
All checked gear must fit into on 15" x 12" bag which will be supplied by the race. Your bag may be picked up at the post-race festival area in Balboa Park at Park Blvd. and Presidents Way. Gear handled in this manner is at your own risk. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity.
Water Stations/Course Support
Water will be served at support stations located approximately every mile starting at mile 2. Grape Ultima Replenisher will also be served at miles 4, 5, 8, 11 and 12. Portable toilets will be located at each of the above support stations. On course services will remain in place based on a 3 hour finish pace.
In recognition of their accomplishment, all half marathon finishers will receive a beautiful medal after completing the half marathon. The top three overall male and female half marathon finishers will also receive a special award, which will be presented on race day on the main stage in the Finish Line Festival.
If you’re an age group winner, your award will be mailed to you approximately 2 weeks following the event. Awards will be offered to the first three finishers, male and female, in the following age groups: 17 & under, 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80+.
Please note: age group awards will be based on net chip time and prize money will be based on clock time.
Medical assistance will be
available at the start, each full service aid station and at the
finish. Physicians, nurses and other health professionals have
volunteered full coverage for the event. Race Guards trained in CPR and first aid will also be out on the course. Runners observing others with
possible medical difficulties along the route should alert the nearest
police officer, race official, aid station or call 911.
There will be one medical tent in the secure, fenced-in finish chute (just beyond the finish line) and one medical tent as well as one first aid tent with self-serve ice and self-serve bandages in the post-race finish line festival area.
The half marathon course crosses the San Diego Trolley tracks in downtown San Diego at 10.7 mi. (Broadway & Kettner) and 10.9 mi. (India & C). Some runners may have to wait for 20 to 30 seconds to allow the trolley to pass. MTS personnel hold trolleys for a limited period of time, but must allow them to pass after a certain time period.
Finish times will not be adjusted. If stopped, please stop your watch and then re-start it when you begin running. Do not cross trolley tracks if the gates are down - you will be disqualified.
