The 5K (3.1 miles) race is a fast loop course that starts and finishes within Balboa Park, in front of the Hall of Champions at Pan American Plaza and Presidents Way. The course winds through beautiful Balboa Park, passing by the Museum of Man, crossing over the Cabrillo Bridge and finishing just past the Spreckels Organ.
Course Time Limits
There is a 1-hour time limit for finishing this event. All participants must be able to maintain a 19:21-minute-mile pace or faster throughout the event.
Slower runners and ALL WALKERS must line up at the rear of the start area. With the ChronoTrack B-Tag, your time starts when you cross the start line.
Every 5K participant will receive a beautiful, top-quality, short-sleeve finisher's shirt. Shirts must be picked up at the AFC Fitness Expo during regular Expo hours. They will not be mailed. While we will do all we can to ensure you receive the shirt size you request, unfortunately we cannot make any guarantees. Click here to learn more about the Expo including the Expo dates and times.
Bib Numbers/Timing Tag
We use the ChronoTrack's B-Tag. The B-tag is a disposable tag that is mounted on your bib number. To ensure an accurate time, race bibs must be clearly visible on the front of the torso and not covered by outer apparel, unaltered and unmodified (do not fold or wrinkle) and pinned in all four corners. Please note that bib numbers will not be mailed out. They must be picked up in person at the AFC Fitness Expo. Be prepared to show your photo ID to claim your bib number.
Another person may pick up your bib number for you, but must present a photo or copy of your picture ID. Bib numbers are nontransferable and irreplaceable if lost, and entry fees are nonrefundable (see Cancellation/Refund and Transfer Policy below for exceptions).
Race Day Bib Number and Shirt Pickup
If you’re unable to attend the AFC Fitness Expo and need to pick up your bib number on race day, you can do so at the 5K start area the morning of the race starting at 5:45 a.m. Race shirts will be available in the festival area near the finish line.
Race Day Parking
There is no shuttle bus for the 5K. You may park in any legal parking lot in Balboa Park. Parking lots are shown on the Finish Area map labeled with a "P." The Largest parking lot is the zoo parking lot adjacent to the Northern bus loading area.
If you are staying at the host hotel, your room package includes bus transportation from the Sheraton to the start area and returns to the Sheraton after the finish from Balboa Park. This service is only available to registered guests.
Water Stations/Course Support
Official full service aid stations are located at the start, mile-1.5 and at the finish.
If you’re an age group winner, your award will be mailed to you approximately 2-3 weeks following the event. Awards will be offered to the first three finishers, male and female, in the following age groups: 17 & under, 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79 and 80.
Please note: age group awards will be based on net chip time and prize money will be based on clock time.
Medical assistance will be available at the start, each full service aid station and at the finish. Physicians, nurses and other health professionals have volunteered full coverage for the event. Runners observing others with possible medical difficulties along the route should alert the nearest police officer, race official or aid station.
All entry fees are NONREFUNDABLE and NONTRANSFERABLE.
If you are entered in the Half Marathon and wish to participate in the 5K, you may keep your same Half Marathon bib and go to the 5K start area. There is no need to do anything to switch to the 5K, and no refund for the price difference.
The transfer period will be available one week prior to event. At this time, a transfer form will be posted on the event website and any registered participant may transfer his or her entry to another person. To transfer a confirmed entry, the new registrant must complete and return the entry transfer form and transfer authorization letter and pay a $20 transfer fee before the deadline. Please note that we do not maintain a waiting list. Registered participants are responsible for finding transferees and making sure transfers are completed prior to the deadline.
To check if you are registered, Log in to Events.com, click on your name from top navigation bar and click "My Events." This page will show all of the events you are registered for. If you registered before June 20, 2018 and do not already have an Events.com account, you will need to create one using these easy instructions. You can also email firstname.lastname@example.org request a confirmation email.
Participating with a bib number and timing tag not officially assigned to you is not permitted. If race officials discover that this has occurred, you and the original registered participant will be banned from this event and future Triple Crown events.
